Now, for the first time, you can experience Disney Magic on the West Coast. No, I'm not talking about the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, which has been entertaining guests for 50 years. I'm speaking of Disney cruises on the incredible 85,000-ton, 2,700-passenger Disney Magic that is now sailing out of Los Angeles to ports of call in the Mexican Riviera.
In Celebration of Disneyland's 50th anniversary, Disney Magic was moved to the port of Los Angeles from the east coast, from where her Disney cruises have taken thousands of guests to islands in the Caribbean. This marks the first time that a Disney Cruise Line ship has featured Disney cruises from a port outside of Florida.
The move came approximately three weeks ago, and by all accounts, it has been paying off for both the passengers of the Disney cruises and Disney itself. "What's nice is we're getting new people—a whole new audience," Disney Cruise Line President Tom McAlpin said. "We are thrilled to be here at the Port of Los Angeles for the summer to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Disneyland."
The guests seem to be just as thrilled that Disney's there. Approximately 80% of bookings for the Disney cruises from the West Coast are made by people who have never been on any Disney cruises at all; that's about 15-20% higher than those sailing from Port Canaveral. And just as in the case of those who book one of the Disney cruises on Magic's sister, Wonder, package deals can be purchased that combine pre- or post-cruise stays at the Disney land resort nearby.
During their fantastic 7-day cruise on Disney Magic, guests will be visiting jewel cities south of the border along the Mexican Riviera. Puerto Vallarta, a mixture of quaint, old-world charm and modern delights; Cabo San Lucas, home to the famous rock formation "El Arco," as well as lots of resort attractions; and Mazatlan, a place renowned for its Mayan sites and relics, are on the itinerary.
Yet it isn't only the itinerary that is new for this cruise line. A new theatrical show, "Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story," gives guest a whole new perspective on this age-old fairy tale, with elaborate set designs, stunning special effects, and an ensemble of Disney characters. It has already proven popular with the families onboard the ship.
Along with the new onboard entertainment, there is, of course, a plethora of activities and games for kids of any age. But there are also several adults-only areas, including nightclubs and the elegant dining room, Palo, to which Mom and Dad can retreat. In fact, Disney has one of the most luxurious cruise lines around, with excellent dining and stylish accommodations.
With Disney Wonder still offering enchanting 3- and 4-night cruise vacations to the Bahamas from Port Canaveral and now Disney Magic heading out from Los Angeles, folks on either side of the country can experience Disney fun at sea. Now, the only question left to ask is, "where will their next port be?"
