Cruise Reservations with No Hesitation

August 03, 2005

Making cruise reservations should be an exciting and seamless process--one made even more so if done with a well-trained travel agent. But it's also an investment. Not only are you investing money, but you're investing time and trust—time out of your busy schedule; trust in your cruise line and travel agent to handle your cruise reservations and travel arrangements properly. So when it comes to making cruise reservations, you should ask yourself some important questions so that when you're finally on the ship, you're completely content.

One question you should ask is, "What is the purpose of my cruise?" Are you making cruise reservations for adventure? Relaxation? Business? To meet new people? Perhaps you want to have a romantic honeymoon. Or maybe you're going simply for the warm weather. Of course, most cruises offer the opportunity for all of those things and more. Still, if there is a specific "theme" you want for your cruise, let your travel agent know when you're making your cruise reservations; that information can greatly help you narrow down the best cruise line and itinerary.

Another helpful step in making cruise reservations is trying to envision being onboard the ship. What sorts of things are you doing? Usually the first thing I do when I get on the ship is find a nice, quiet spot by the pool and grab a margarita in one hand and a book in the other. But that's me. Maybe you're attending a cooking demonstration and then heading to listen to a lecture on regional history. How about practicing your free-throw on the basketball court and then working out in the fitness room? Are you having diner and dancing with your sweetheart? There are many cruise lines out there, and each of them offers different activities and entertainment; there's a cruise line that is perfect for you.

Ok, now try to picture yourself on a shore excursion. What do you see yourself doing? Are there any specific destinations are calling to you? Are you hiking down a rugged trail through a rainforest? Maybe you are shopping for exotic and one-of-a-kind souvenirs in a market. Or perhaps you're simply reclining in a comfortable chair on the beach watching the waves roll in. All these options and many more are available to you when you make your cruise reservations, but you need to pick the right itinerary and cruise line. For example, if you're sure that you want to work on your tan, a cruise to Alaska would not be the vacation for you. Conversely, if you'd like to see a Polar Bear, a trip to a port of call on the Equator wouldn't make much sense. (Although wouldn't that be something if you saw one there!)

So basically, just think about what you and your traveling companions like when you're making cruise reservations. What interests do you have? What do you want to do on your cruise? And of course, how much time you have for your cruise. Do some research online before making cruise reservations. What places look interesting to you? Now it's ok if you don't know exactly which cruise line to take or what itinerary would be best; the experience of travel agents can help you with that and give you some great ideas for activities and places to see. Remember, you can pretty much do and see anything in the world on a cruise; while you should definitely have an idea of what you want to do, it doesn't hurt to keep an open mind.
