7 Great Reasons to Have a Cabin with a Balcony

October 25, 2005

Nobody take a cruise vacation so they can hang out in their cabin. There's so much to do and see onboard the cruise ship, not to mention at each port of call. Still, the time a passenger does spend in the cabin should be relaxing and totally comfortable. Reserving one of the cabins with a balcony can really enhance the cruising experience, for more ways than one. In fact, here are 7 great reasons to have a cabin with a balcony. Why 7? Well, how about one for every continent and we'll leave it at that.

1. Sunrises – If you get up early enough, watching the sun rise up from the depths of the ocean is really a great way to start your day. It starts as a soft glow, so faint at first that you're not sure if you're eyes are deceiving you. Well, you've seen sunrises before, I'm sure, so I don't need to go into specifics. But if you've never seen one from the balcony of your cruise ship, then you're missing out. FYI—this experience is greatly enhanced with a cup of coffee.

2. Photography – You take them so that you remember. You take them so that you can celebrate later. You take them so that you can show them to your friends and family say, "Na na na naaa na! I was here and you weren't!" Stunning vistas of crystalline blue glaciers in Alaska, the green, knife-edge mountains of Maui, a picture of you and your sweetheart with a Caribbean or Mediterranean sea port in the background—you can capture it all for posterity. But whatever the reason you take photos, being able to do so from the comfort of your own cruise ship balcony is great. Besides that fact that you can get a great shot of the world as you sail through it, you don't have to worry about a family of 6 walking in front of the lens.

3. Eating Out – Have your dinner delivered to your room and dine out! Or breakfast or lunch, for that matter. Some cruise lines even have the wait staff come to your cabin and serve you as you sit on your private verandah. It's one of the signature cruise ship experiences and so much better than your usual coffee and donut that you wolf down on the way to work!

4. Fresh Air – I don't want to go into the whole science behind why enclosed spaces don't really smell like spring roses for too long, but being able to slide open your cruise ship balcony doors and breath in some fresh, sea air is well worth the few extra dollars you'd spend on a balcony cabin.

5. Sea Life – It will be tough to see the pod of dolphins swimming past your cruise ship if you have no window! Even with a window, seeing the fluke of a whale or a family of sea otters in the water—even when the scene is right outside your cabin—can be impossible. With a balcony, however, you can really get a good look at Flipper and friends.

6. Romantic – Ah, amore! Sharing a quiet moment on your balcony with your newlywed or spouse of 25 years is something that can honestly be as memorable as your trip to the summit of Acropolis Hill. Toast your love with sparkling champagne or a nice bottle of Riesling from the cruise ship's wine cellar.

7. Sunsets – When the day goes to sleep and the sun sets peacefully into a darkening sea, you'll be glad you've got a balcony to see it all. And of course, sunsets are the beginning to another reason why having a balcony is great: starlit nights.
