Norwegian Cruise Line Strikes Back!

February 13, 2006

As the ball rolls down the lane, it all signs point to it heading into the gutter. The bowler crosses his fingers and quietly, but with force, says, "C'mon, c'mon, c'mon," as if he can will the ball away from danger. A few more feet and there's no way it's hitting that last pin. Yet as Norwegian Cruise Line's Pearl makes a slight turn to follow the sweeping coast line of yet another beautiful island, the ball's progression changes slightly---just a hair. Still, it's enough to avoid the gutter and pick up the spare! Once again, a passenger's wish is granted on an NCL ship!

Think you've heard of all the new and fantastic onboard ideas for cruise ships? Think again. Norwegian Cruise Line is breaking new ground...er, water...with its plans to have a 4-lane bowling alley on Norwegian Pearl, which will be released in 2007.

This will be the cruise industry's first full-size 10-pin bowling alley. It will be part of Bliss, a sports-themed gathering spot onboard the innovative ship; beyond the bowling alley, passengers will find a sports bar, air hockey tables, flat-screen televisions telecasting various feats of athleticism, foosball tables, and other arcade games.

In the evenings, Bliss will be transformed into a high-energy nightclub with a DJ spinning tunes. The bowling alley will still be there, but there will also be a spacious dance floor.

While there's no doubt that a bowling alley on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship---let alone the concept of a bowling alley on a cruise ship---is enough to make you smile, the question that comes to mind is: Will the ball roll true? Norwegian Cruise Line President and CEO Colin Veitch says, "Much of the time yes, and some of the time no. We won't be hosting the world bowling championships; it's just fun we're shooting for."

The truth is that since cruise ships are so large, there's rarely any moments when you feel like you're moving through the water at 22 knots. Still, it's possible that a slight movement could cause your bowling ball to veer from its course. But, with the laughs you and your friends are having, do you think you'll really mind?

It's all part and parcel of cruise lines trying to outdo one another with more innovative onboard features for their passengers. And why not! It makes the onboard atmosphere that much more fun. And even if you're not the type of cruise passenger that goes in for all the bells and whistles, remember that cruise lines are putting as much emphasis into enhancing their itineraries as they are they're onboard charms.
