Delta Queen Cruise Food

Experience America's heartland and learn about our country's history when you travel aboard great Delta Queen Steamboat Company cruises. Ya?ll be sure to enjoy many of the delicious southern dishes featured on a Delta Queen Cruise menu. The Delta Queen?s fleet includes three wonderful ships: the American Queen, the Delta Queen and the Mississippi Queen.

Here?s a closer look at the abundant Delta Queen Cruise food selections provided by two of these ships.

Delta Queen Cruise Food - American Queen

Delta Queen Cruise food on the American Queen is good, well presented and plentiful. While sugar-free, vegetarian and other menu items are available, the food is geared to those who don't count calories often. Much of the items on the Delta Queen Cruise menu are fried, creamed or sauced. But hey, that doesn't make it bad. Quite the contrary. It's almost too good.

During your days at sea, enjoy Delta Queen Cruise food served in the large airy and attractive J.M. White Dining Room, where huge glass windows offer great views of the river. There are two dinner seatings: 6 and 8:30 pm. A list of moderately priced, domestic wines is offered. Bar service -- including sodas - is offered in the dining room.

Dinner is the highlight of each day. Offerings on a Delta Queen Cruise menu include such southern favorites as fried green tomatoes, stuffed and fried catfish, jambalaya, a variety of gumbos and bisques, and always a vegetarian or heart-healthy choice. Service is excellent and iced tea glasses and coffee mugs are refilled promptly. See something interesting on the menu, but not sure if you want to order it? Then have a taste. The ship?s good-natured waiters will bring out a sample portion.

And, if spicy Cajun or southern cooking isn't what you are looking for, Delta Queen Cruise food always includes a filet mignon, broiled chicken or fish and more. (If your diet requirements don't include spicy presentations, let your server know, or advise the company when you book.)

As you sail down the river, select tempting desserts. Delta Queen Cruise food ranges from old fashioned chocolate sundaes in those traditional glass v-shaped servers, to peach pies and chocolate cakes like Grandma used to make. The recipe for the Mississippi Mud Pie on the Delta Queen Cruise menu is available to guests, an absolutely sinful concoction of chocolate, pecans, whipping cream and liquor. Each night there is a different flavor of bread pudding.

Breakfast comes a la carte or from the buffet, and includes with biscuits and gravy, made-to-order omelets, bacon, ham or sausage, a quiche, potatoes, lots of good fresh fruit, cereals, and of course, grits. Breakfast is the only room service option available.

A lunch Delta Queen Cruise menu features salads, a fish dish, and, usually three or four other choices. Try a poor boy sandwich of fried oysters, or opt for a buffet set up in the Grand Saloon where do-it-yourself sandwiches are fast and easy.

Coffee, tea and hot chocolate on the Delta Queen Cruise menu is available 24 hours a day in the Mark Twain Gallery, considered the vessel's main lobby. Each day at "tea time" coffee and cookies are set out on the Front Porch and in the Ladies Parlor (though it's more of an afterthought than a full fledged British tea). Popcorn and hors d'oeuvres, usually veggies, potato chips and a dip, are available in the late afternoon in the Engine Room Bar.

There are two over-lapping sittings in the Orleans Dining Room. Everyone sits at a designated table, but early-seating passengers are enjoying dessert from the Delta Queen Cruise menu when main seating passengers arrive. Not having to turn over tables between seatings eliminates the rush and strain. Breakfast and lunch are open seating, with both buffet and menu selections. Continental breakfast starts early and runs late in the Forward Lounge.

Delta Queen Cruise food is down-home and hearty. Steak, prime rib, southern-style barbecue ribs and chicken, fried catfish, soups, green salads and tasty pastry (including the line's famous bread pudding, available every night) and ice cream desserts are all featured on the Delta Queen cruise menu. Cajun and Creole dishes are featured, as well as other regional selections and a vegetarian and a heart-healthy dish are offered at every lunch and dinner. Grilled chicken breast with steamed vegetables and baked potato is available every night as another light selection. In case you work up an appetite walking the open decks after dinner, there's also a themed Moonlight Buffet at 10:15 that is strong on desserts. Service in the Orleans Dining Room is attentive and lively.
