Spirit of '98
Spirit of '98 is a charming vessel, designed to emulate the early-20th century coastal steamer. Onboard, you'll find carved wooden cabinetry, plush floral upholstery and a Grand Salon complete with a player piano---like something straight out of the movies. In fact, Spirit of '98 has tried her hand as one of Hollywood's brightest movie sets. Starring in the Kevin Costner film 'Wyatt Earp,' Spirit of '98 carried Costner's character north to the Gold Rush.
Offering 7-night cruises touring the Pacific Northwestern part of the country, this ship sails American river cruises April, September and October. May to September she offers 8 to 10-night Alaska cruise itineraries.
Spirit of '98 - Accommodations
Although Spirit of '98 boasts authentic old-world charm, she is of course a modern ship complete with modern amenities. TV/VCR, Internet, and phone service is available in every suite and cabin. A luxurious Owner's Suite occupies three rooms on the top deck, including a living room, king-size bed, fully stocked complimentary bar, refrigerator, large view windows and large bathroom with whirlpool tub. Several other categories are available on board; all offer that Cruise West experience. Spirit of '98 carries only 96 guests offering an intimate, casual, unique cruising adventure.
Spirit of '98 - Dining, Activities & Entertainment
The focus onboard Spirit of '98, as is on all Cruise West ships, is on the destination, nature and exploration. You won't find Spirit of '98 loaded down with onboard distractions. What you'll find is a focus on nature itself - guests prefer to watch whales breaching the surface right next to the boat than spend an evening in an onboard casino.
Breakfasts and lunches are open seating during set hours. Dinner is served with open seating and at one designated time. Guests enjoy this because it allows for a friendly, casual dining atmosphere. Onboard lectures and slide shows are offered en route to port which passengers enjoy because it expands their understanding and appreciation of the cultures and natural history of their destination. Shore excursions are often guided by people who live and work in the community which also enhances the experience, offering a hands-on perspective.
Part of the joy of traveling on a small ship is the ability to explore your location without overrunning the community with your fellow ship mates. Traveling with about 100 is a lot more manageable for small fishing villages in Alaska than a large cruise ship. Guests tend to discover more about these fascinating ports of call when they arrive in a smaller group.
